Whether this takes the form of formal, well thought-out mission statements, or more fluffy, less focused ideas of what you want your life to look like, having an idea of your ideal future allows you to ensure that the decisions you make in your life are taking you in the right direction to achieve that future.
Having a clear idea of where – and who – you want to be also allows you to know when you are going off track. Identifying early on that you are starting to veer away from your ideal future allows you to take quick and effective corrective actions to get back on track.
Knowing where you want to be in life also helps you to identify what you are currently doing in your life that is contrary to that future. If, in your ideal future, you want to spend time with kids and a loving partner, but at the moment you are spending all your time at work to gain material possessions, then you can see how your current life is not well set up to support your ideal future. You can put changes in place now that will get you what you want.
